I’ve been working on my blog a lot this week, but you won’t see the results until March, when I start bringing you interviews with some friends who have new books. This week, all I’m bringing you is a brief review of a generic product. (I did this in my old blog some, never consistently. But at least I’m consistent about being inconsistent.)
Product: Safeway’s Diced Tomatoes.
Verdict: Splurge on name brand. Maybe I got a bad batch, but these tasted like can. Can, can, can. The meatballs didn’t stand a chance.
I usually like their stuff, too, but you’re right, they don’t always bat it out of the park. Will put the mustard on the “no” list!
I’ve enjoyed your generic brand taste-testing. In fact, since reading it a while ago I’ve become more conscience of what things taste like when it comes to generic vs. brand. In fact, I recently had an experience where I did notice a difference. I bought the Trader Joe’s Dijon Mustard. I typically buy either the Giant brand or Grey Poupon but I was at TJ, they had it and I bought it. I am a big fan of TJ so I typically love their stuff. The mustard was not so great. The first time I put up with it, the second time I thought ‘this tastes very vinegary.’ Sure enough when I looked at the ingredient list the first item listed is apple cider vinegar. The ‘regular’ dijon mustard only has vinegar. Who would have thought something like that would make such a difference!
I always prefer food that tastes like cardboard box.
